What if the answer was yes??
I had coffee with a friend the other day. We hadn’t seen each other in a few months, so we chatted about all sorts of topics. She’s a life coach and I’m a therapist, so inevitably we ended up discussing our common ground– what makes people tick. We’ve both had clients who are immobilized by fear, who truly want to make positive changes in their lives but just can’t seem to get past feeling terrified of making those changes. And, honestly, who hasn’t felt that way?
Who doesn’t feel that way?
It’s difficult to make a change– any change, even small ones. It’s so much easier to stay snug in our comfort zone, floating along in life, not making any waves, not asking for too much. Have you ever ridden on the “lazy river” ride at a waterpark? It’s kind of like that– easy, gentle, hardly any effort required. There are times when the lazy river ride is perfect. After a long day at the park you need the rest. And when you look over at some of the other waterpark rides– log flume, 3 story drop, chutes that go in loops– the desire to stay in the lazy river can be pretty strong. Some people stay there all day.
Anyway, the conversation with my friend reminded me of a quote (I’m sorry I can’t remember who said it)– What would you do today if you knew the answer would be “yes!”? When we lives our lives in fear– of rejection, of abandonment, of failure, of change– we assume the answer will automatically be “no!” and never ask the question. Now I’m not saying we need to jump straight from the lazy river to the 3 story high chutes with loops ride. Sometimes just getting out of the lazy river is enough for one day.
YES you can exit the lazy river.
The next step is up to you.
What would you do today if you knew the answer would be “yes!”?
