What are you waiting for?
Here’s a story that was shared with me recently, and I wanted to share it with all of you since it pertains to therapy!
Farmer Joe had a wide rock buried in the middle of one of his fields. He tried to plow and plant around it, but over the years it broke more than a few of his plows and cultivators.
He thought he would have to live with the inconvenience since the rock was so big.
But one day, after breaking yet another plow, Farmer Joe decided to do something about the rock– no matter how much work it took! He brought a sledgehammer and a big crowbar out into the field. He was ready for hours of backbreaking toil and labor.
But when he slipped the crowbar under the rock, it came up from the ground with hardly any effort. The rock was only a couple of inches thick! Farmer Joe worked a few minutes with his sledgehammer to break it up.
As he went for his tractor to cart the pieces away, Farmer Joe shook his head and thought of how much trouble he would have spared himself if he’d just taken action sooner.
Moral of the story?
Sometimes the problems in our lives aren’t as difficult to manage as we think they’ll be. Sometimes the issues we struggle with– those that sap our energy and time and make us cranky and anxious and depressed– can be addressed and managed with some focused effort and the right tools (aka, therapy sessions and new coping skills).
Unlike in years past, a course of therapy can be short-term and last only a few months. It can be highly targeted to address specific challenges (like anxiety, depression, or grief). Also, it is geared to provide you with tools to help you manage the problem after therapy has finished. You and your therapist will decide how long your course of therapy will last.
Like Farmer Joe in the story, have you been running over the same troublesome “rock” for years? Have you reached the point where you’re simply tired of trying to avoid it, deny it, hope it magically goes away on its’ own? If so, maybe it’s time to consider asking for help in managing it. What are you waiting for? Help is as close as the nearest email or phone! And the solution might be easier than you think.
