Weeds
I’ve read somewhere that a weed is simply the right plant in the wrong place. Think about that for a minute. The right plant…. wrong place. Put simply– they’re out of place.
Weeds aren’t evil! Or bad or destructive or the end of your beautiful green expanse of lawn. They’re just not where they belong.
So let’s consider probably the most well-known example of a “weed”– the dandelion. If you look at a dandelion from the perspective of simply a flower, then it has many positive qualities. It blooms a really pretty yellow color. And you have to admit that once it’s gone to seed it’s kind of fun to try and blow all the little fluffy seed parts away! Plus, people make wine out of dandelions. And salads. And tea. Dandelions can be fairly useful and enjoyable plants!
Except maybe in your manicured front yard. Every spring, war is declared against dandelions in front yards all over this country. So eradication is the name of the game. When really—
Right plant… wrong place.
Sometimes we can feel that way, too. Maybe in your career or workplace. Perhaps in your church. Or your neighborhood. Even your family. And sometimes, battles ensue.
But, here’s the thing– there’s nothing wrong with a dandelion. Just like there’s nothing wrong with us. We simply need to find the right place to be. Easier said than done, I know. But sometimes just realizing that you’re out of place can be the first step to changing your location.
Where are you growing right now? Is it a supportive, encouraging, positive place that provides you with what you need in order to flourish and be your best? Or maybe it has some of those qualities but not all of them. Maybe it doesn’t have any positive qualities at all.
So maybe it’s time to relocate and find a better habitat in which to grow.
If you need a little assistance in finding your new habitat, or better managing the one you’re in– I’m always here to help. And if you’re curious about how music therapy fits into the picture, I’m happy to answer questions!
