The Winter Blues
And no, I’m not referring to a new kind of music! This time of year many people experience the “blues”– fatigue, disrupted sleep patterns, low energy, a general feeling of un-motivation, no real desire to get out and do the activities they normally would do. Chalk it up to the grey, dreary, wintry weather this time of year. But the truth is– we need sunshine!
It’s natural to feel a little “bluesy” after several cloudy days in a row. The time for concern is when that feeling stays with you for longer than a couple of weeks. It’s also cause for concern if you experience these symptoms every winter. That’s what’s known in the therapy world as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It’s estimated that about 20% of the US population experiences SAD each year, so you’re certainly not alone if you feel this way!
The good news is that the remedies are very effective in a short period of time. Two of the most popular remedies are exercise (because we know it boosts our mood and does all sorts of other good things for our bodies) and light therapy. In some cases, medication might be prescribed for short-term use. Additionally, seeing a therapist can also be beneficial during this time.
What differentiates SAD from other types of depression?
SAD is generally only experienced seasonally, so when the season changes– you feel better! Other types of depression are not tied to the seasons, they’re typically caused by other factors (grief, loss, chemical imbalance, heredity, etc.) and require more intensive treatment than SAD.
If you’re suffering from the “blues” or feeling depressed, make an appointment with a mental health professional to get evaluated. Treatment options are available, and you can be on your way to a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life again!
