This week I have just finished reading a wonderful book titled “When the Drummers Were Women” by Layne Redmond, an internationally acclaimed hand drummer. It’s a fascinating exploration of the history of drumming and the ways in which women played a part. Although a bit dense in world history and culture at times, this is an interesting and in-depth explanation of the lineage of drumming through the ages and the roles women have had in drumming, society, religion, and culture. The evolution of drums and drumming is exquisitely portrayed in the beautiful artwork throughout the book. For anyone interested in drumming or the changing role of women in history, this book is the one for you!
