Finding Home
I didn’t plan this particular post out ahead of time– inspiration struck! I recently picked up a new meditation book that has daily meditations in it. This morning’s meditation was about home. When I opened up my e-mail shortly after meditating, I found a link to my favorite music group’s new release– a cover of the song “Home.” Not being one to dismiss such occurrences as mere coincidence, I thought perhaps I was being nudged to write on the topic. Hopefully it speaks to some of you!
“Home is any four walls that enclose the right person.” ~Helen Rowland
“Any old place I can hang my hat is home sweet home to me.” ~William Jerome
“Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” ~Robert Frost
There are many more quotes I could include, but my point is that it can mean different things to different people. It can even mean different things at different times in one’s life. Over the course of our lifetimes, it’s very likely that we have several places we call “home.” And each one of them is probably very different depending on our life stage, our geographic location, and the other people involved.
Have you ever stopped and thought about what it means to you? Where have you felt it most in your life? Has that changed over the years? What qualities are involved? Think outside the box for a moment– it doesn’t have to be a physical space, it can be spiritual or emotional as well. It can be a state of being. You, your Self, can be a “home” wherever you happen to be. Take the time to create that space for yourself.
If you’re feeling out of sorts in life, perhaps you’re just not home. Consider taking up a few activities or practices that help foster that sense– yoga, art, socializing with friends, gardening, volunteering for a favorite cause, or meditation. In what other ways might you be able to create that sense for yourself?
