By Way of Sorrow
“By Way of Sorrow”
You’ve been taken by the wind
You have known the kiss of sorrow
Doors that would not take you in
Outcast and a stranger
You have come by way of sorrow
You have come by way of tears
But you’ll reach your destiny
Meant to find you all these years
Meant to find you all these years
You have drunk a bitter wine
With none to be your comfort
You who once were left behind
You will be welcome at love’s table
You have come by way of sorrow
You have come by way of tears
But you’ll reach your destiny
Meant to find you all these years
Meant to find you all these years
All the nights that joy has slept
Will awake to days of laughter
All the tears that you have wept
We’ll dance in freedom ever after
You have come by way of sorrow
You have come by way of tears
But you’ll reach your destiny
Meant to find you all these years
Meant to find you all these
You have come by way of sorrow
You have come by way of tears
You’ll reach your destiny
Meant to find you all these years
Meant to find you all these years
~as recorded by the Wailin’ Jennys
This is a song I think of quite often when I think of my clients. No one has ever come to me for music therapy treatment because they’re feeling great and happy. People come because they’re struggling. Because they’ve experienced trauma or past abuse. Many come for help with managing their depression or anxiety. And like the song says, they come by way of sorrow and tears. Yes, there is a lot of sadness expressed in this song. We all experience times like that in our lives. But I also hear hope in the song. And the certainty that things will get better, that there will be times of laughter and love and acceptance.
I’ve tried hard to make my office a welcoming, comfortable, safe space for my clients to bring their darkest thoughts and fears. A place where we can experience and explore those tough emotions in a creative and nonjudgmental way. A space that fosters healing and hope. If you’re curious about how my approach might help you, feel free to contact me anytime. I’m always happy to answer questions!
